VirtualBox 自4.1.0正式版起，支持虚拟机的克隆；64位主机的内存限制提升到1TB；增加WDDM图形卡驱动，Windows虚拟机可以支持Windows Aero效果，支持Direct3D；等给力更新。

VirtualBox最早是德国一家软件公司InnoTek所开发的虚拟系统软件，后来被Sun收购,改名为Sun VirtualBox，在Sun被Oracle收购后现改名为Oracle VirtualBox。

因为他是开源的，不同于VM，而且功能强大，可以在 Linux/Mac 和 Windows 主机中运行， 并支持在其中安装 Windows (NT 4.0、2000、XP、Server 2003、Vista、Win7)、DOS/Windows 3.x、Linux (2.4 和 2.6)、OpenBSD 等系列的客户操作系统。

— Windows Additions: fixed guest driver crash of VBoxSF in certain cases 
— Windows Additions: don't load the WDDM driver if 3D support is not available for Windows 8 guests to keep the guest maintainable in that case (still better to miss some features than providing a blank screen) 
— Solaris Additions: added support for X.org Server 1.11 and 1.12
