 在Vista中，微软引起了边栏这个全新的环境以运行一些小程序，而这些程序就被成为边栏小工具。在Windows 7中，这些小工具依然以桌面小工具的形式存在，但边栏已经被移除了。比较有趣的是，在Vista中，用户既可以在边栏中使用小工具，也可以将小工具拖到桌面上，而在Windows 7中，小工具只能出现在桌面上。

跟Vista下一样，Windows 7中的桌面小工具主要是采用动态HTML，java，CSS和XML来开发的。而微软到目前为止并未更新Windows 7的小工具库。通过WIN+G，可以呼出小工具。

与Vista相比的改进：

*边栏消失了   -  确切的说，是被隐藏了。因为事实上，它还在后台运行。
*不会自动运行 - 在Vista中比较烦人的一件事就是边栏会默认随机启动，减缓了本来就不快的开机速度。而在Windows 7中，边栏不会在系统安装后自动运行，保持了系统的简洁。
*可触控 - Windows 7中的小工具全部添加了触摸支持，而当用户触摸时，小工具会放大以适应手指大小
*离线支持 - 与Vista下不同的是，像天气、股票这样必须联网才能正常工作的小工具在Windows 7下支持离线显示
*大小可调 - 在Vista下，将边栏小工具拖到桌面上时会自动放大；而在WIndows 7中，用户可以自行调整小工具大小。
*高DPI支持 - 虽然还不完善，但Windows 7中的小工具可以针对DPI的变化自行调整。
*显示桌面时依然可见 - 在Vista下，当用户点击显示桌面后，所有小工具也会最小化。而在WIndows 7中，则不会。
*磁性边缘 - 在Windows 7下，当用户将小工具在排成一排时，小工具之间还是会保持一定的距离，不会粘在一起。
没有记事本工具了 - 微软移除了记事本小工具，取而代之的是新任务栏中一个名为便笺的组件，跟记事本有着类似的功能

Windows 7中的小工具主要有：

日历、时钟、CPU仪表、货币、标题、媒体中心、拼图、天气、股票

PS:在Windows 7中，同一工具的不同版本可同时显示。

总结

看起来与其前任相比、Windows 7中的小工具都有了一定的改进，显然深思熟虑后小工具这个功能已经趋于完善了。只不过在Vista下时，边栏就几乎被忽略了，而在Windows 7中，我想也不会红火。

But the container environment, Windows Sidebar, is no longer provided.

Fun fact: Remember, in Windows Vista, gadgets could appear in either the Windows Sidebar or directly on the desktop. However, in each case, the Sidebar had to be running in order for the gadgets to appear. In Windows 7, you can only access Windows Gadgets directly on the surface of the desktop.
